RACE COURSE

This mostly flat looped course utilizes the North and South Plateau Trails, as well as the Fire Tower Trail. While never dropping down off the top plateau of the mountain, this course appeals to the new trail runner wanting to experience moderately technical trails, while will draw in the experienced trail runners looking for a fast course.

Starting in the parking lot of the picnic area, the course runs north and quickly ducks into the woods on the Fire Tower Trail heading east. The former railroad bed narrows down to a single track trail and winds its way north of park road before crossing it after a half mile. The course remains on the Fire Tower trail for another half mile as it climbs ever so slightly as it runs toward the southeast. The course turns to the east on the Bog Trail for less than a tenth of a mile before intersecting a gravel road. The course turns right and then quickly left onto the South Plateau Loop. The course elevation drops slightly for one quarter mile before crossing the paved park road, but stays straight on the South Plateau Trail for another one-third mile. From there, the course turns to the right, leaving the trails and joins up with the Cabin Road for less than two-tenths of a mile where it joins up with the North Plateau Trail. The course traverses north across the scenic overlook and then stays on the North Plateau for almost a full mile, as it turns toward the southwest then to the south. After crossing over the park road near the park entrance, the course continues to stay on the North Plateau Trail for another one-quarter mile before finishing at the overlook onto McKay Hollow.
