FORMAT⁄RULES

The Dirty Spokes Ekiden Trail Running Race will start at 8:30 a.m. Teams will be issued a timing chip which will serve as a "baton" (in place of the sash). All exchanges must take place in the transition area (will be marked at the start⁄finish area). Team that completes the 40K first wins!

As you approach the transition area you have one of three choices: (1) go out on another lap, (2) pass the timing chip to another runner as they go out onto the course, (3) stop. If you choose option (1)you must still show the timing chip to the recorders at the start⁄finish area and tell them you are going back out. If you choose option (2) your runner waiting to go out onto the course must check in (preferably before you get there – makes things go quicker for your team). Once the runner on the course comes through the start⁄finish area and they show the recorders the timing chip they can pass it off and you can get running! If you choose option (3) all you need to do is show the timing chip to the recorders and you may exit the start⁄finish area. If you choose option (3) once you and⁄or your team is ready to resume running you must check back in to let the recorders know you are going back out on the course.

If your team has an injury out on the course and you cannot complete the lap but can send word (through another runner) or radio in… EITHER WAY THE NEW RUNNER ON THE COURSE MUST CHECK IN!!!   Once your runner radios in and reports to CANCEL the lap it is CANCELLED. AGAIN IF YOUR RUNNER RADIOS IN OR HAS SOMEONE RADIO IN FOR THEM, THE LAP THEY ARE ON IS CANCELLED!!! (We just don’t want there to be any confusion on this).

Runners may run as many laps consecutively as they wish. Each runner must run a minimum of 1 lap during the 40K race. All laps must be completed by 3:30 p.m. or they will NOT count.

PACKET PICKUP

Packet pickup will be the morning of the race starting at 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. Race starts at 8:30 a.m. SHARP!

RACE COURSE

This is a great single and double track off road running experience! The race will start in the "Steeplechase Field" (required for spacing) but will soon lead into the woods. The terrain is rolling hills, steep climbs, single track, double track along with technical sections and creek crossings (about 2-3 feet wide ⁄ 2-3 inches deep). The course is beautiful and offers something for every runner truly wishing to ´ditch the city´.

RACE CATEGORIES

Male 120 & Under Female 120 & Under Co-ed 120 & Under
Male 121-160 Female 121-160 Co-ed 121-160

***Teams may consist of 4 or less participants (if you have a team of less than 4 participants (2 or 3), that is alright you will just compete against the other teams with 4 participants in your category). Medals will be given out to the top three teams in each category. Walkers are encouraged to participate; however, you should be able to complete the 40K at a 16 minute mile pace or under to receive an official time.

TIMING

Timing for the Dirty Spokes Race... we have purchased the RFID Timing System (www.rfidtiming.com)and will be doing "chip timing" for all of our races this year! That´s right for the Dirty Spokes 12⁄6 hour mountain bike races, XTERRA Georgia Trail Running Races, Dirty Spokes Ekiden Trail Run and the Dirty Spokes Duathlon we will be using "chip timing" for each of these races. Same as always in the "team events ⁄ races" each team will have their own timing chip (2 ⁄ 4 person teams will have 1 chip and it will serve as a "baton"). We will hand these "chips" out at the registration table and will collect them back at the end of the races... FOR ANY CHIP THAT IS LOST ⁄ NOT RETURNED AFTER THE RACE YOU WILL BE BILLED $35.00.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION – EKIDEN RELAY:

An Ekiden is a long-distance relay race, where a single runner from each team wears a cloth sash (tasuki) suspended from the shoulder across the chest. The sash is passed from one teammate to the next, like the baton in a regular relay. Eki means "station," while den means "transmit." The Ekiden relay, and the name itself, has spread from Japan to different parts of the world, including China, Kenya and Tanzania.

The first Ekiden relay was run in 1917, the 50th anniversary of the transfer of Japan´s capital from the ancient city of Kyoto to Tokyo. This new type of relay race was named Ekiden by the poet Toki Zemmaro (1885-1980), who was head of the city´s newspaper Social Affairs Department at the time.
